Somebody To Lean On

Founders Note: Today on the blog we have are monthly contributor Sophia, she is sharing her heart on this month's theme community. You can learn more about Sophia and her blog on the about page.

I went to church this past Friday for something that our church calls Impact Night.  Impact Night is where we go before prophetic ministers and we receive a personal message from God.  As I went, I received a unexpected but much needed message.  She told me that I had trust issues, and that I do not trust anyone.

It was easy for me to get offended by this message and at first I was.  But there was a deeper meaning behind this message that I felt God wanted me to reflect on. She told me  that the reason why I am going through what I am going through is because this is something that God wants to fix in me.

You see, I am a loner.  I really am, and I prefer to be this way.  If I have a problem, I lean on myself to fix it.  I do not like to rely on anyone else but me sometimes or most of the time, I do not like to even rely on God.  I had to reflect on why this was.  Why is it so hard for me to admit to other people that I need help?  Why is it so hard for me to open up to other people and admit my shortcomings and not allow other people to help me?

An even bigger question, is why have I somehow hardened my heart to other people and toward God?  It is not like I want to shut anyone out or even shut God out, but for some reason this is an area that I struggle in letting people in.

The prophetic minister further told me that there were things in my past that prevented me from trusting other people.  And in fact, she was right.  There have been past relationships that have let me down and people that have let me down.  So in my mind, I came to the conclusion that if I do not let anyone in, then they cannot let me down.  I turn inward, because I know that I can trust myself without a shadow of a doubt and there was no way that I was going to let myself down.

Do you see how this is a problem?

The Bible teaches us

“The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’"

I think in the Garden of Eden, Adam was walking around looking all depressed at all the animals with no one else to talk to. He probably sat around, doing everything on his own, not really knowing or understanding what was missing in his life.  I do not think that God wants any of us to be alone.  There are people, church, family, or resources God may place in our lives for people to help us, but it is up to us to take them up on that offer.

Like me, you may have issues with that.  You may have a problems opening up and letting people in because you see it as a weakness.  But I am convinced that God puts us in situation where we cannot help ourselves so that we have to learn to lean on other people.

God wants us to lean on Him and He wants us to lean on other people.  Even Jesus had disciples.  We all need somebody to lean on in this Earth.

If you look at the idea of the “church.”  The church is not a building, but rather a group of people.  If you are a Christian, then we are all apart of one church.  A community of people that are meant to lean on and encourage one another.  This aspect, I feel can get lost among us Christian.  We get so busy and absorbed in our own little worlds that we forget we are in this together.

As my brother or sister, if you are hurting, I am hurting.  If you are rejoicing then I am rejoicing.  You can never underestimate the power of just having people to be there for you to lift you up when you are down or to be celebrate with you when you have achieved something great.

A lesson that I have learned this week that I would like to share with you, is to never get too isolated.  Never think there is only you in this world and no one else.  And on the flip side, never forget to be there for someone else.

You never know how far your smile or encouraging words can go with someone, even if you do not know or think they need it.  So let’ s be the church that God called us to be.  Do not forget to be there for others and most of all do not forget that there is always someone that is there for you.  Take advantage of that, and never feel you have to go about life all on your own.

  1. Sophia, Thank you for being so open about your struggles. I love what you said "Never think there is only you in this world and no one else. And on the flip side, never forget to be there for someone else." such a good reminder to not only reach out for help but to reach out and help others.
