“A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in
expressing his opinion…The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the fountain
of wisdom a bubbling brook.” Proverbs 18:2&4

I am a talker. I will talk about anything with anyone. I
love hearing people’s stories, asking them questions, and discussing what we
think about any given issue. I long for my words to be true and helpful and encouraging.

Recently, I received some terrible news. My Mom basically
told me that my words have been full of unrest lately. This really made me stop
and think. She is one of my closest companions, so she gets to hear my uncensored thoughts. Her rebuke slammed hard against me. I admitted
that I do tend to share things that are driving me nuts or that I don’t really
like. I also said that if she would listen closer, I talk about things that I
love and am happy about just as much.

The thing is, I’m sad that I ever gave her reason to have to
say those words to me. I’m sad that so many negative, upsetting, and unhelpful
words came out of my mouth in the first place. I’m grateful to her for coming
to me and I’m really trying to work on it.

John Piper always encourages people not to focus on the sin
that they are battling. It’s not about trying harder to have my mouth be a
fountain of living water. I need to take my soul to God’s Word and let my mind
rest on the riches of His grace.

A grateful soul is one whose mouth is full of grace and
truth and life. Let us feast on God and His goodness. May this gratitude
overflow with showers of pleasant words!

  1. It's really great that you have that sort of relationship with your mother. We can all use little reminders from time to time.
