I have been reading, "The Pursuit of God" by A.W. Tozer and the second chapter is talking about possessing nothing. It mentioned Matthew 5:3 which says, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. - Matt. 5:3. This verse reminds us that when we have nothing that is where we find God. I noticed this when i went to Mexico on a mission trip my sophomore year of college, that even though the people that we were staying with that week had very little, they had incredible faith in God to provide for them daily, despite their circumstances. That definitely struck me in a good way, and reminded me that he is all I need. The chapter continues on to talk about how Abraham gave up his son Issac because God asked him to, he put his trust in God that he would be faithful even though it felt like he was giving up everything. There's something to be said about that kind of faith, the faith that no matter what happens you still trust God. My prayer is that kind of faith would be evident in my life, and that i would take time to find that rest that we all so desperately need in God.
Here's a little snippet from the chapter-----
"The way to deeper knowledge of God is through the lonely valleys of soul poverty and abnegation of all things. The blessed ones who possess the Kingdom are they who have repudiated every external thing and have rooted from their hearts all sense of possessing. These are the "poor in spirit." They have reached an inward state paralleling the outward circumstances of the common beggar in the streets of Jerusalem; that is what the word "poor" as Christ used it actually means. These blessed poor are no longer slaves to the tyranny of things. They have broken the yoke of the oppressor; and this they have done not by fighting but by surrendering. Though free from all sense of possessing, they yet possess all things. "Theirs is the kingdom of heaven."--A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God.
