Jesus, Others, You

Founders Note: Today on the blog we have are monthly contributor Courtney sharing her heart on this month's theme joy. You can find out more about Courtney on are About page.

I have a page in my Bible where I write quotes that are impactful to me. Years ago, I wrote in a little acronym. It is:
J esus
O thers
Y ou

It is something that is so simple and yet so profound. It addresses where our focus is. When your focus is right, then joy is the natural result.

Priority #1: Jesus
It seems cliche to say that Jesus should be your number one priority, but it is something that we constantly need to remind ourselves of. We know this, but how often do we act like this? Far too often we run around our busy day with ourselves and our to-do list as our priority. Take a few moments throughout the day to pray and remind yourself of your first priority.

Matthew 22:27-28: And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the great and foremost commandment."

Priority #2: Others
Jesus Himself said that the second greatest commandment was to love your neighbor. Our first priority is to glorify God and our second is to serve. Our service to others is the fruit of the first priority. A heart that is filled with love and honor for Christ will overflow with sacrificial service towards others.

Matthew 22:39 - The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

Priority #3: You
Once Christ is your first priority and others are your second, then you can think about your needs and your desires. But I daresay that if those two things are your priorities then you will hardly think about yourself.

Joy Stealers
Having the right focus will result in joy because we are obeying the Lord. When we obey the priorities He has set forth in Scripture, our obedience is rewarded with joy inexpressible of full of glory. This seems so simple! So why is it so hard to have joy? Here are a few things that steal our joy and prevent us from having the right focus. Today ask yourselves these questions and check where your heart is.

Wrong Priorities: Am I focused on God's priorities or my own?
- Unchecked Sin: Is there ongoing sin in my life that I need to repent of?
Worry: Do I trust in the Lord's plan for my life?
Lack of Fellowship: Am I spending time with other believers rejoicing in what God has done for us?
Lack of Time in God's Word: Am I spending time meditating on Scripture and learning about the Lord?

If any of those describe you, I pray that you would fix it and experience the joy that the Lord intends for His children.

  1. Girl, this post hits home for me right now. Thank you so much for sharing it. I'd never heard of the J.O.Y. acronym, but it makes total sense! And a quick reference way to check yourself daily. Life does get busy, but we have to remain joyful!

Four Tips for Creating Community through Blogging

1. Reach out to other bloggers:  this is an  essential when wanting to get into community. It can be as small as a comment on their blog, or an email. I have built relationships with other bloggers through email, commenting on their blogs, etc. For me it has been a beneficial thing, to create community in something that I really didn't know there was any.   This is a great post on why bloggers need community.  2. Join a blog group on Facebook, or some other social media group: I have joined the Peony Project on facebook which is a group for other christian bloggers. It's a great group and i would definitely recommend it!  3. Make meaningful comments: when I say meaningful comments I don't mean that you have to write a novel, but at least engage with the post somehow. Check out Madison's post on how to comment on blogs to find out more.  4. Plan a blogger Meetup : If you there

It's a New Year and with that brings a new season of blogging.  I can't believe it's been two years since we started this blog. It's going to be a linkup where there's a theme for each month, but I may do some months without a theme. Anyway, each month me and my co-host will share a recipe that we use to create community around our tables. And you will have a chance to link it up! I am currently booked with co-hosts until October, but I am looking to fill November and December. So if you are interested email me at: britney.thequietplace@gmail.com and I can give you more information. 2. Blogging Tips: I would like to start posting some blogging tips this year,

Being Content

Content, As christian women we here that word more times than we can count, especially in a season of waiting. Content is defined as,   pleased and satisfied : not needing more.  Have you been in a season in your life where your feel like you are just waiting? Waiting for a new job, waiting for things to get better, waiting for marriage, etc. Whatever you are waiting for, sometimes it just seems like it's taking forever just like a long line at the grocery store.  When I think about being content, my thoughts instantly go to being content in my singleness. How many times have we heard the cliche lines like "just wait, God's got it" said by well meaning people, only to make you feel worse. There was a time in my life where it was so hard to hear all of those lines without just wanting to cry, because like I said it made me feel worse rather than better.  That is when I would get discontent in waiting,  sometimes I feel like i am in this never-endin
