Founders Note: Today on the blog we have are monthly contributor Kiki sharing her heart on this month's theme Ruth. You can learn more about Kiki and her blog on the about page.
I'm not exactly sure how old Ruth was when her husband died, but I imagine that she was probably not much older than you and me. When I think of her circumstances, I instantly think of the heartbreak, the sadness, and the tragedy that she faced. Not only had her husband died, but her father-in-law and brother-in-law had as well. She, her sister-in-law, and her mother-in-law were all widows.
And after all of this had happened, Naomi, her mother-in-law, told her to return home. To go back to her hometown. And that's when I'm amazed and inspired by Ruth's bold response.
"Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God" (Ruth 1:16, NLT).
But Ruth didn't pick the easy way out. She chose to stick by Naomi's side. She chose to travel to a land likely unknown to her and live with her mother-in-law, all with a future unknown.
She had no idea what was in store for her, but she chose to love, live her life boldly, and live a life for God. She chose a life like Jesus and a life that we're called to live as well.
As a slight control-freak, it's hard for me to travel without knowing the destination. It's hard for me to trust and do new things. But God has a future for us that is bright, even if it's unknown to us.
With the new year quickly approaching, I hope that 2015 will bring us new opportunities to say no to the easy way out. And that we'll love like Ruth, live a bold life like Ruth, and follow God, too.
hmmm such good, solid thoughts.
ReplyDeletei'm pretty sure i would have taken the easy way too...ruth's strength is so encouraging.
I love this. I, too, struggle with not having a destination. I love to plan, and I am future-oriented. I would love to weave in trusting and just going more into my life.
ReplyDeleteLet's keep saying no to the easy way out together, Kiki!!! :)
