Seeking God: Because Time Equals Relationship

Founders Note: Today on the blog we have a guest post from Malinda, she is sharing her heart on this month's theme Seeking God. You can learn more about Malinda in her bio at the end of the post.

A long time ago I heard the phrase "time equals relationship." At the time it was in reference to building a relationship with the opposite gender. But the same truth applies to any relationship: with children, co-workers, friends, even "online relationships."

And I believe there are two components to investing time: quantity and quality.

The apostle Paul writes to the believers encouraging them to pray all the time. 1Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Never stop praying.”

Paul was not referring to a 24/7 prayer meeting. He didn’t intend for them to neglect their responsibilities or other relationships in order to “get on their knees in prayer.” What he encouraged is meant to be an ongoing conversation that happens throughout the day.

What would I do if my husband checked a box after a 5 minute conversation over our coffee in the morning - but then neglected to talk to me again during the day? Our relationship grows deeper and matures as we talk and ask each other questions, and dream together. The same happens when we regularly seek God.

When we seek God, He makes us a promise: “we will find Him.” In the book of Jeremiah it says, “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” (29:13)

The only caveat He gives is that it must be sincere. Seek him honestly. Earnestly. With pure motives and a genuine heart. With devotion. Without hesitation or distraction.

Maybe you’re like me. You wake up in a sweat because you didn't "do" your bible reading for the day. If that’s the case, then maybe you need to focus on quality time. Read through one book of the bible. Go slow. Ask God to show you something amazing in every line of you read. Or perhaps you need to focus on memorizing one verse. Until it changes your thinking. Your actions. Your life.

And if you're someone who needs a kick in the pants to do anything - (procrastinators unite!) you need to focus on quantity time. You might do well to set a big goal for the year. Get into a good devotional or bible reading plan. This could be the year you focus on reading the whole bible cover to cover.

Our goal is always to be closer to God.  Not to check boxes or cross an item off our to-do list. We don’t seek Him out of obligation because “we know we should,” We were made to know Him. And when we invest both quality and a quantity of time, we will find Him. It’s His promise.

  1. Thanks for that post Malinda! It's funny because quality time is my love language and I'm horrible at it lol. I'm an introvert by nature so I'm usually in my own head so I feel like I'm horrible with relationships in general but I agree with you that a sincere heart and desire to spend time with God is what He's looking for. Thank you for that reminder :)

  3. Olivia - glad you were encouraged. It isn't about a set amount of time, or some formula that "gets" us closer to God. We are closer to God when we have made the time. Time = relationship.

Today She is sharing her heart on this months theme: Beauty in the Brokenness. So be sure to check out her blog at the links below! If you've ever heard a group of people share their testimonies, a lot of them have a common thread: brokenness. A lot of now believers had to come to a very low point in their lives before they had their breaking moment of calling out to Jesus. Have you ever wondered why that is? Why is it that so many of us have to hit rock bottom before we'll realize our infinite need for a Savior? I don't know the answer to that question, but I do know that in my darkest moments, I've seen the Lord hand out grace and turn brokenness into beauty. We all tend t...

Finding Comfort in the "Waiting Room"

Founders Note: Today's post is written by our new friend Brooke. Her blog is called "Living as a Single Gal". (you can find the link below) We've just discovered Brooke's blog and we look forward to unwrapping more of the great wisdom she has to share. Without further ado, here is her post... Imagine, if you will, that you are in a waiting room. The room is crowded; people standing, people on chairs, people sitting on the floor; this room is totally packed full. And all of these people are waiting. Waiting for what you may ask? That’s simple; love. You are standing in a corner with some of your girlfriends having some laughs. Then one of them gets called out of the room. Then another. Then another; another one bites the dust. One by one all of your single girlfriends are leaving the waiting room and finding true love. Not only are your friends leaving you, but the rest room seems to empty out significantly. And then there’s you. --...

Being Content

Content, As christian women we here that word more times than we can count, especially in a season of waiting. Content is defined as,   pleased and satisfied : not needing more.  Have you been in a season in your life where your feel like you are just waiting? Waiting for a new job, waiting for things to get better, waiting for marriage, etc. Whatever you are waiting for, sometimes it just seems like it's taking forever just like a long line at the grocery store.  When I think about being content, my thoughts instantly go to being content in my singleness. How many times have we heard the cliche lines like "just wait, God's got it" said by well meaning people, only to make you feel worse. There was a time in my life where it was so hard to hear all of those lines without just wanting to cry, because like I said it made me feel worse rather than better.  That is when I would get discontent in waiting,  sometimes I feel like i am in this never...
