Today I came across a post of Niagara Falls. It had me
remembering how it was my frame of reference for waterfalls. Growing up I lived
in a small town and didn’t have a lot of experience seeing waterfalls in person,
but I had family who lived in Niagara Falls and we would often go to see the
Falls when we went to visit them. I remember I was at Letchworth State Park
with my Girl Scout troop and a Park Guide was taking us on a walk and showing
us the waterfalls at the park. She asked us all if we had ever seen something so
big and beautiful, to which I responded something to the effect of “That’s
nothing! I’ve seen bigger falls for sure”. The tour guide was just about
shocked and asked where I had seen a bigger waterfall. I then told her “Niagara
Falls”. She responded with laughter and said something like “well of course
this isn’t as big as Niagara Falls, that’s the biggest One!” I was surprised to
hear that! I had absolutely NO IDEA that Niagara Falls was a wonder of the
world. As I got older, I learned much more about this wonder of the world and
the history connected to it. I also had additional experiences visiting other
waterfalls which increased my frame of reference for these things. But you know
what? I think God wants us to have a Niagara Falls Frame of Reference. He is a
big God, and because He is such, He desires for us to have big expectations of
Him. It’s an insult for us to expect less from a God SO enormous. This also
reminds me of how the Bible tells us to have faith like a child, and without it
no one will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. When we have faith like a child,
Niagara Falls Expectation Faith, we can move mountains because our perspective
is that our God is bigger than the mountain. It’s only when we grow up, become
an adult, and have a bigger frame of reference that we start to see ourselves
in comparison to the mountain, instead of our God in comparison to it. When we
do that we can start to lose hope and greatly lower our expectations of God and
ourselves. It’s only when we have the perspective of a little child, and an appropriate
perspective of God, that we view the mountain in its proper size comparison. Remember
that a mountain is only as big as what you compare it to, so set it next to God’s
feet and you will realize how small it really is.
Blessings,
Hillary
